Any questions?

What is a freestanding bath ?

A freestanding bath — also known as a standalone or freestanding bathtub — is a model that sits freely in the bathroom, without being fixed to a wall. Finished on all sides, it becomes the centrepiece of the room.

Unlike a built-in bath, installation is straightforward : no tiling around it, no panel to fix. It rests on its own feet or an integrated base. At Spalina, all our freestanding baths are made from premium acrylic, available in several shapes — oval, rectangular, round or asymmetric — and in several finishes : gloss white, matte black, matte grey.

Not to be confused with the semi-freestanding bath, which keeps the look of a freestanding model while leaning against a wall — the ideal solution for more compact bathrooms.

How much space do you need for a freestanding bath ?

A freestanding bath requires at least 60 cm of clearance on each side to allow comfortable movement and access to the taps. You will therefore need a bathroom of at least 7 to 8 m², depending on the model chosen.

For tighter spaces, compact models are the way to go : the Loom 2.0 (130x130 cm, round) or the Stellar (170x75 cm, rectangular) offer a smaller footprint without compromising on comfort. If you have less than 60 cm of clearance on one side, a semi-freestanding bath will be more suitable — it keeps the look of a freestanding model while leaning against a wall, and is available in 160 cm, 170 cm and 180 cm.

Not sure about the dimensions ? Send us your bathroom floor plan : our team is available 5d/7 to advise you.

Can you shower in a freestanding bathtub?

It's perfectly possible to shower in a freestanding bathtub, provided you install a suitable solution to protect the bathroom from splashes. For example, you could install a shower curtain rail around the bathtub. Similarly, you could recess a shower head into the ceiling for added comfort.

What material for a freestanding bathtub?

For a freestanding bathtub, the preferred material is acrylic, offering lightness, durability, and ease of cleaning. Acrylic guarantees excellent heat retention and a very soft feel. This material also ensures an elegant finish and optimal comfort.

How do you know if your bathtub is acrylic?

To tell if a bathtub is made of acrylic, touch it. If it's made of this material, it will feel warm and slightly flexible. Acrylic does retain heat well.

Additionally, this type of bathtub offers a smooth, glossy or matte surface depending on the finish. Another clue is weight. Acrylic bathtubs are lighter than those made of metal or cast iron. Finally, when tapping gently, you'll notice a quieter sound compared to other materials.

Which bath is the most comfortable ?

There is no universal answer — comfort depends on your height, how you use the bath, and the space available. That said, several criteria make a real difference : interior length, basin depth, backrest shape and material.

For length, allow at least 170 cm if you are 5'9" or taller — our 170 cm baths and 180 cm baths allow full immersion. For depth, freestanding oval baths are generally deeper than standard built-in models. For massage, a whirlpool bath adds an incomparable relaxation dimension — toning water jets or enveloping air bubbles depending on the system chosen. For two people, our 2-person baths offer generous space with moulded ergonomic seating.

In all cases, the acrylic used in all Spalina baths guarantees a soft touch and excellent heat retention — two factors that extend the pleasure of your bath.

How to design a small bathroom with a freestanding bath ?

Installing a freestanding bath in a small bathroom is perfectly possible, as long as you choose the right format and optimise the layout. Here are the key rules.

Choose the right format : for a bathroom of 5 to 7 m², go for 150 cm models such as the Kelly 150 or the Loona 150. The Loom 2.0 (130x130 cm, round) is our most compact model — its circular format means it fits in almost any space.

Respect clearances : allow at least 60 cm of free space on each side of the bath for circulation and access to the taps. If this is not possible on one side, a semi-freestanding bath will be more suitable — it leans against a wall, saving space while keeping the freestanding look.

Optimise the space : position the bath along the main axis of the room or at a diagonal to create a sense of volume. Avoid bulky furniture nearby. A corner bath such as the Capri 150 is also an excellent alternative for small spaces — it fits into a corner and frees up the centre of the bathroom.

What is the smallest freestanding bath ?

The most compact bath in the Spalina range is the Loom 2.0 — a round bath measuring 130x130 cm, available in gloss white, matte black and matte grey. Its circular format gives it one of the smallest footprints on the market, while its depth allows for generous immersion.

For a compact oval format, our Kelly 150, Loona 150, Neroon 2.0 150 and Samba 150 models measure 150 cm in length — a comfortable size for people up to 5'7", with real space savings compared to a 170 cm model.

For even tighter spaces, our semi-freestanding baths offer a smaller footprint while keeping the freestanding look : the Mint 150 and Naos 150 measure 150x75 cm, and the Capri 150 (right or left) installs in a corner to make the most of the available space. All come with a 2-year warranty and free delivery within 6 working days.

Are Spalina freestanding bathtubs freestanding?

At Spalina, every freestanding bathtub in stock is freestanding. This means you can install our bathtubs directly on the floor, thanks to their integral finish. Note that freestanding models do not necessarily have legs.

What guarantees does Spalina offer ?

All Spalina baths come with a 2-year warranty against manufacturing and conformity defects. This warranty covers parts and labour in the event of a proven defect. Our after-sales service is available 5d/7 to answer any technical or commercial questions after receipt.

For whirlpool baths, every model is tested for 4 hours in water before dispatch — a systematic step in our specifications that guarantees the correct operation of the entire hydraulic and electrical system before the bath leaves our warehouse.

Spalina is a French brand founded in 2003, specialising in acrylic baths, with over 60,000 baths delivered. For any after-sales enquiry, contact us at hello@spalina.fr or via our contact form.

What tap for a freestanding bath ?

Choosing the right tap for a freestanding bath depends mainly on the shape of the bath and the location of your water supply. Two main families exist : floor-mounted bath taps and deck-mounted taps fitted on the bath rim.

For a freestanding bath with no pre-drilled holes on the rim, a floor-mounted tap is the most suitable solution. At Spalina, we offer four models : Dedge, Vogue, Ondaz and Scarlett — all chrome finish, from 265€. For a bath with pre-drilled holes on the rim, our Infinite chrome and Infinite noire mate sets offer direct installation from 198€.

In all cases, check the number and spacing of the holes on your bath before choosing your tap. If in doubt, our team is available 5d/7 to advise you.

What is the difference between a freestanding bath and a semi-freestanding bath ?

A freestanding bath sits freely in the bathroom, away from all walls. It is finished on all sides and becomes the centrepiece of the room. It requires generous space — allow at least 60 cm of clearance on each side — and a floor water supply.

A semi-freestanding bath leans against a wall. It retains the look of a freestanding model on its three visible sides, while simplifying installation : the water supply can come through the wall, and it takes up less space. It is the ideal solution for bathrooms of 5 to 7 m² that want a beautiful design without space constraints.

In short : if you have the space and a floor water supply, go for a freestanding bath. If your bathroom is more compact or your plumbing runs through the wall, a semi-freestanding bath is more suitable. In both cases, Spalina offers models in 160, 170 and 180 cm, in acrylic, delivered free of charge within 6 working days.

How to choose your freestanding bathtub: tips from Spalina

When it comes to choosing your freestanding bathtub, we suggest considering several factors: style, finish, dimensions, product reviews and price.

Style and finish

For the best visual effect, choose a freestanding bathtub that matches your bathroom’s style, from the tiles and wall art to the vanity, cabinets and shower (if you want a shower-bath combo).

We recommend choosing the colour, style and finish of your bathtub based on the decorative vibe you’re going for: modern or retro. Spalina bathtubs come in a variety of shapes (round, oval and rectangular) and colours (high-gloss white, matte black and matte grey).

Dimensions

The ideal dimensions for your freestanding bathtub will depend on your bathroom’s size and layout. In other words, you’ll need to measure your bathroom’s available space, factoring in sufficient clearance around your bathtub.

In addition to your bathroom’s characteristics, your height is a key consideration when it comes to dimensions. If you are tall, you’ll want to go for a 170 or 180 cm freestanding bathtub. You’ll find several models in these dimensions on our website.

Product reviews

One advantage to ordering online is that you get to read customer reviews for each product. We suggest taking them into account and steering clear of products with a poor overall rating or a high number of negative reviews. If you take this precaution, you’ll spare yourself disappointment with your freestanding bathtub purchase.

For what it’s worth, if you look at the reviews on the Spalina website, you’ll see they are quite positive. That’s a testament to the quality of our bathtubs as well as our delivery service.

Material

Freestanding bathtubs come in a wide variety of materials: cast iron, wood, glass, stone, copper, solid surface, enamelled steel, acrylic and reinforced acrylic. Each material has its pros and cons.

Take cast iron, for example: cast iron freestanding bathtubs are quite durable and great at retaining water heat. That said, they are also quite heavy and expensive.

Wood, in turn, will lend a warm, natural touch to your bathroom. At the same time, a wooden freestanding bathtub will be extremely costly as rot-resistant woods come at a premium price.

Solid surface is a synthetic material that has a number of perks: it is durable, insulating and easy to maintain. Its main downside is, yet again, its hefty price tag.

Amidst this sea of options, we chose to make our bathtubs out of reinforced acrylic, a material that offers several advantages – a sleek look, a silky-smooth feel, excellent shock and scratch resistance, and easy maintenance – all at an affordable price. Acrylic also does a great job of maintaining water temperature so you can indulge in extra-leisurely soaks.

Price

When you started shopping for a freestanding bathtub, you no doubt set a budget. That means price will inevitably factor into your decision. Having said that, if you want to create a truly stylish designer bathroom, don’t forget to listen to your heart, too.

Also be sure to consider the price of your prospective bathtub in light of its style and level of quality. At Spalina, we strive to bring you superb products at the best price.

With this list of criteria in mind, have a look through our collection of in-stock freestanding bathtubs and place your order in a few easy clicks! Oh, and don’t forget to head over to our “Faucets & Accessories” page to round out your freestanding bathtub purchase.
